Aquatic Fragrance and So Much Gratitude

Last weekend when Kristy and I Jeep traveled with friends to the Mississippi River we noticed a large area off the main channel of the river was hosting American lotus plants. Most of the aquatic plants appeared to be in full bloom.

I have thought about those blossoms all week and this afternoon Kristy and I returned to the area, this time with a canoe and kayak, to paddle out to enjoy the lotus blossoms. For those not familiar with the American lotus, they have huge leaves and very aromatic blossoms. For Kristy the scented air is worth the trip. I prefer photos too.

To paddle among the blossoms required us covering approximately a mile upstream on the Mississippi River. After enjoying the lotus blossoms, we then paddled across the river to the other side, just to say we did it. From there we returned to the boat ramp.

As we were crossing the main channel I saw what I thought was a barge tied up to the Iowa shoreline. Kristy declined my invitation to paddle close to the barge. We didn’t need to. What I hadn’t noticed was the barge was moving upstream toward us. Soon the barge was quite close as we neared the boat ramp.

We had a great time together and I am so grateful Kristy spent the afternoon on the Mississippi River with me. She is not a big fan of paddling on big water, but she did it and I am thrilled. Thanks Kristy!
