Words For the Day: Abscission Layer (and more)

With the majority of the autumn leaves now down on the ground I had a clear view of some of our silver maple leaves yet to drop. As I studied the leaves I was able to see the abscission layer that forms at the base of the leaf stalk (petiole). Cells in this layer form as photosynthesis ends (autumn). The abscission layer’s purpose is to facilitate the separation of the leaf in a manner that does not leave an open wound on the branch.

Soon the abscission layers on these leaves will result in them falling to the ground. Isn’t our natural world interesting!

Many of the remaining leaves that have not fallen are quite colorful.

This afternoon, after attending an “All Saints” service where my mother was recognized, Kristy and I did a little camera hawk hunting. We found two red-tailed hawks. One took flight quickly, the second allowed for many images to be recorded.
