Jack-in-the-Pulpit and Green Dragon Seeds Compared

Last week I found and photographed two red-berry (seed) clumps. I knew one was a Jack-in-the-Pulpit plant, but I was not sure of the other. According to my app, the second clump of seeds was a “green dragon.” Green dragon plants are very uncommon, so I had to be convinced I had found a green dragon plant. The only way I knew to verify - other than growing plants - was to photograph a known green dragon seed clump.

Today I hiked to where I eventually found a green dragon plant. Sure enough, the red seeds were there and I photographed them. I then put the two seed clumps together in a single image for comparison. When seen side-by-side, I find it easy to tell the difference based on three differences:

  • Size of seed clump

  • Conformity (or lack of) in seed sizes

  • Hue of seeds

I am now convinced I did find a green dragon plant last week. If/when I am in the area I will look at it again and will certainly check on it next spring when it is flowering.
