Possible Million Dollar Snake

Today I found what may, under appropriate conditions, be a snake worth millions of dollars.

The reptile for today was a Graham’s crayfish snake - probably a female based on the size. Graham’s crayfish snakes are considered a threatened species in Iowa and in some reference material not known to exist in our area. That I found a healthy adult was a good thing!

The reference to “Million Dollar Snake” applies if or when applications are submitted for grant funding. That we have habitat that supports Graham’s crayfish snakes and massasauga rattlesnakes moves us up the priority list for some programs.

Graham’s crayfish snakes tend to be quite docile. This snake allowed me to approach close enough for photos. Its color is washed out due to the upcoming shed of skin.
