Friend or Foe

Out in our yard we apparently have at least one, if not more, red-winged blackbird nests. I know because both the male and multiple females have turned protective. When I walk certain parts of our yard I am scolded and have birds flying near me. Such behavior had me wondering - are red-winged blackbirds friends or foe?

Let’s address the “foe” question first. I am certain most people do not or would not appreciate a bird dive-bombing them as the bird attempts to initiate a behavior change in a person or animal that approaches too close to their nest or territory. Man, woman, bald eagle, or other living creature - red-winged blackbirds are not afraid of you! Know why the black birds appear aggressive and their behavior becomes understandable.

As for the friend discussion - red-winged blackbirds feed on many insects. Without predation, these insects would be very detrimental to our crops (our food and fuel sources).

I suppose red-winged blackbirds can be both friend and foe, depending on what they are doing. Since red-winged blackbirds are one of our most populous birds, they must be doing something right.
