Resist the Temptation to Count

I’ve suggested many times that people do not follow me when I am traveling down the road. I never know what I might see and when I do notice something interesting, I am likely to stop - like this morning.

Ahead of me on the road was something I could not recognize by its shape. From the windshield it appeared there was an animal on the road, but there were too many bumps and lumps. If it was an animal, what species was it? Why did whatever I was seeing look so odd?

As I moved closer I recognized I was seeing an opossum, but what were the lumps? Soon I was close enough to pick out all of the little ‘possum heads. This poor Momma possum was moving the clan to new housing when her path and mine intersected.

What she lacked in speed she made up for in determination as she retreated under load to the long grass in the ditch. At that point I had no photos and was disappointed I was not able to document what I was seeing. Then she and her clan moved into a bit of a clearing where I was able to shot some pics. I pressed my shutter release and the possum family moved to safety.
