Shorebird Bonanza!
As soon as I was out of my truck the gnats attacked in droves at Sweet Marsh. My only escape for my face was to put my 3D face mask on. That may have ended up being a good move - gnats or not - when I then parked myself on a mudflat to watch what came through.
Mudflats may not seem to be a good location for birding, but shorebirds are attracted to them. The shorebirds roam the mud, stopping to stab their beaks into the muck for a morsel to eat. If you can tolerate the bugs, mudflats can be very interesting place to sit and watch for birds. Pay close attention though… shorebirds tend to blend well with the mudflat habitat.
My outing was exceptional as I observed several uncommon species. In fact, one species was a “Life Bird” for me (first time observing them). I have triple checked species identification with multiple photos being used. It is possible I have incorrectly identified these birds. Feel free to reach out if you disagree. (I spent maybe a half-hour with the plovers. They never did leave, even when I left!)
