I Was This Old Before I Learned

Imagine my surprise when I watched a hen mallard lift its head above the water with a frog firmly in its grip. Then the mallard beat the poor frog senseless before, I am assuming since I could not see it, the mallard ate it. After witnessing the brutality I did some research and, sure enough, mallards do eat frogs.

I have now added this tidbit of info to my vast collection of mostly useless information - until I need it. Since I only learned this today, I reached out to an outdoor-savvy friend to see if he too knew mallards were omnivores. He was not aware of this fact either. No I don’t feel quite so naive.

While I was out I found this barred owl hiding in a tree.

This view shows what fish see when they look up from below my ice fishing hole. Don’ worry, no fish were caught or injured in the making of my photo.
