Soon Buddy, Very Soon

I spent some time today looking in the timber to see what I could find. No specific species was on my mind, but I did have a hunch I might see a whitetail deer or two - maybe more. Not too much time passed before I found a doe on the edge of thick brush in easy view from my perspective. Not only did she not run from me, but she stayed in one spot for maybe a minute or so. She had to have seen me and probably caught wind of me, but still, she did not move.

Seeing the doe remain stationary gave me a hunch she may have wanted to move, but something was stopping her. Since we are in early November, one reason for her hesitation to flee promptly came to mind. Maye this doe did not want to move because there was a buck chasing her. And, she is not yet receptive to mating with him. Mr. Buck has one thing in mind and knows that soon, very soon, this doe will be receptive for 24 to 36 hours. Mr. Buck will follow his “lady” until repeated matings have happened and will then move on. All he has to do is wait and not do something silly resulting in him being tagged by a hunter or car.

After watching the doe I undertook the task of finding a possible buck I expected was nearby. It took some time before I spotted a shiny tine and a dark eye. Mr. Buck was within 10-15 yards and moving ever so slightly, never providing a full clear view. He did, however, allow a couple of compositions to be made that showcased some of him. Eventually he moved into thicker brush, not that many yards away from me, yet I could no longer see him. Mr. Buck is patiently waiting. His time will come soon. He will be passing on some nice looking genes!

Not only did I find deer in the woods, but I also found a couple of wild turkeys too.

It was a good day in the woods. But, every day is a good day in the woods!
