Birds and Ice

Like it or not our temperatures are getting colder. Overnight lows brought the first skim of ice on the river - some of the ice thick enough that I did not want to swing hard into it with a paddle. Most ice though, was easily navigable. Some ice even presented with an artistic appearance.

On the water I saw several bird species with a couple of them probably leaving soon. First was a belted kingfisher that did not let me get close enough for decent pictures. I do see them during the worst of winter, but not very often.

Further down the river I found a pair of hooded mergansers. One of them appears to be wearing a toupee or having a “bad hair day”! (See the second merganser picture.)

Watching my paddling was an adult bald eagle that looked so impressive against a clear blue sky.
